Let’s be honest here – most guys wouldn’t dream of treating their car the same way they treat their skin. Every man knows that if you don’t treat your car well with good quality products, it will start to look rough and could start rusting. Only bummer is... whilst the car can be exchanged for a new one, your skin can't and that should be a pretty compelling reason to start thinking about what you do with it.
So - this is your first and most basic lesson in grooming. There is a wide variety of products and they are all good for different purposes. The first thing you will have to know is what basic skin care is about. This is easily divided in six different categories;
Cleanser Just like when you become Mr DIY and paint the walls at home, it all starts with thorough preparation to get a good result. A cleanser removes dirt, superfluous grease and dead skin cells. A lot of people still believe soap and water are good enough but unfortunately soap can be very harsh and can dry out the skin so it really is much wiser to use a cleanser (yes – even in the daily shower). You will get the best results if you use cleanser both in the morning and the evening.
Toner Toner is a complement to cleansers and takes away the last bit of dirt, grease, helps to reduce pores and balances the PH levels in the skin. Also, clean skin absorbs moisturiser much more effectively so increasing the results. The best way of applying toner is either with cotton wool that can be bought in pretty much any supermarket or at the pharmacist. Alternatively, if you have stubble, splash some toner on with your hands. The face was should be absorbed by the skin and not wiped off. Exfoliator/Scrub
Exfoliator acts as a polish for the skin and can help to get rid of a dull complexion. It contains tiny grains of various materials that remove dead skin cells. But don't get carried away! Exfoliator is definitely not for daily use and should be only be used 1-2 times per week. Moisturizer Moisturizer is the most important skin care product of all! It protects as well as moisturizes and gives nourishment to the skin. There are two sorts of moisturizers; day creams and night creams. These days, manufacturers are adding SPFs (sun protection factors - what they have in sun tan lotion) to their day creams which is very important - keep an eye out for them. Night creams tend to be heavier. I reckon most of you (even the utmost beginners!) can guess when to apply which cream! Eye creams
The skin is much thinner around the eyes then the rest of the face and this is the area which will age first on your face! Eye creams moisturise the skin, reduce and help prevent fine lines wrinkles (skin has got a memory you see, but that is way too advanced for now – more later!) Some creams reduce puffiness and dark circles under your eyes. To get the best effect it should be used both morning and evenings. Face mask This is most certainly the most advanced part and something that most men probably hesitate about doing. There are a variety of face masks all of which serve different purposes such as deep cleansing, moisturizing or anti aging. Generally, you don't need to use these more than 1-2 times per week and… man is it a good treat for yourself. There you go – this was Lesson no 1 – not too bad hey? In the following six lessons we will go through each category in depth and also recommend some great products. Lesson number 8 is for the very advanced but much more about that later… Now - to Lesson no 2! Do you want to win a grooming kit from Swedish label Recipe for Men?
